Timeless Year End Tax Moves 

• Pay  your  home-related  costs by mailing and paying your January mortgage before the end of the year. This will allow you to deduct that extra interest payment when you itemize.  Also, if you remit your property tax amount to your county tax collector before the year ends, you can deduct it next filing season, too.
• Make home energy improvement
by adding insulation or replacing drafty windows or doors. These items are tax deductible and will lower your tax bill.  If you make these or other IRS-approved energy efficiency upgrades to your residence by Dec. 31, you could be eligible for a $500 tax credit

Year Round Tax Planning Tips for Entrepreneurs and Businesses 

• Upgrade your office
 by  deducting the cost of equipment as well as office supplies you buy for your business before year-end.  Essentially for equipment, you have two ways to claim a deduction: all at once (known as first-year expensing), or gradually over the life of the property, as fixed by law, by claiming depreciation deductions.  Small businesses, including sole proprietorships, are permitted to expense up to $500,000 of new business equipment, computers and furniture purchased in 2011.  This immediate write-off can reduce taxable income, but, the business must be profitable to benefit.
